Chess is a valuable classroom tool. It can provide an intellectually stimulating and rewarding activity. It also teaches discipline, concentration and planning, with the participant attacking and defending in order to checkmate the opponent. The game motivates young people to delve deep into their mental resources. Chess coheres the mind to anticipate, make decisions and react speedily.

At Phoenix College, children as young as six years old play chess. They compete with other schools at Cluster, District and Provincial levels. Since 2014, the under 9, under 11 and under 13 age groups have always progressed from cluster, district up to provincial competitions. They have also won trophies and medals at district level.
