Academic Overview (Focus)

Grade RR and R

Our (Grade RR and R) is structured around the South African Curriculum Assessment Policy Statements and follows recognized Early Childhood Development guidelines. The emphasis is on giving parents educationally sound tools to better enable childhood development by ‘learning through play’.

Grades 1 to 3

The Junior Primary phase aspires to cater for the needs of all children by encouraging them to develop confidence and become well-balanced individuals. At this stage learning styles are developed so that the pupils are allowed the opportunity to explore their full potential. A growth mindset approach is encouraged with the emphasis on the learning process. Teaching the various Thinking Maps allows the pupils to explore and expand their knowledge.

Grades 4 to 6

We in the senior primary phase of Phoenix College of Johannesburg’s believe in giving each and every pupil the opportunity to discover, grow and achieve their maximum potential in a safe, stimulating and holistic environment.

All pupils learn in different ways and our caring, enthusiastic staff provide the necessary skills for each student to develop into critical, independent thinkers.

General Education and Training Phase (Grade 7 to 9)

There are eight Learning Areas in the National Curriculum Statement for Grade 7 to 9:

  • Human and Social Sciences
  • Languages (Language of Learning and Additional Languages)
  • Life Orientation
  • Mathematics
  • Natural Sciences
  • Technology

Further Education and Training Phase (Grade 10 - 12)

All tertiary institutions in South Africa and many international universities will only accept superior results in the NSC examinations for admission into their degree courses.

Grade 9 learners are subjected to a personality test at the end of the year to enable them to choose three elective subjects from Option B.

Extra-curricular academic support programmes, more especially in Mathematics and English, are run on a regular basis throughout the school terms. Students can arrange extra lessons with other subjects on an appointment basis. There is no charge for these programmes.
