Athletics

The athletics department participates in the Inner City Schools athletics competitions.

Latest Updates

Phoenix College participates annually in school, Cluster, District and Provincial athletics competitions. Our athletics teams have done us proud over the years in both track and field athletics events from around 2014 up to last year [2020]. Due to the Covid 19 restrictions and regulations, this year we will unfortunately be unable to partake in any sporting activities.

Age Groups

The school offers athletics in the Under 8; 9; 10; 11; 12 and 13 age-groups This effectively means that learners as young as 7 years are fully involved in athletics. The Sports-For All policy as advocated by the Department of Education is fully met at Phoenix College.

Achievements

From 2017 onwards, our athletics teams have been some of the top achievers at Cluster and District levels. A large number of trophies and medals have been won for the school. Phoenix College has provided a fair share of athletes to the Johannesburg South District teams competing at the Gauteng Provincial Athletics Championships over the years.

There have been some outstanding performances from individual learners from Phoenix College:

Mduduzi Ncube

  • Achieved provincial level qualification in triple jump and long jump.

Bongani Ncube

  • Participated in the under 15s 100 metre sprint at provincial level.

James Legodi and Litha Lugwali

  • Participated in the 4800metres at provincial level and numerous cross-country tournaments.

The covid 19 lockdown in 2020, meant that athletic events could not continue as planned.
